Anastasia State Park and the Friends of Anastasia State Park have invited Historic City News readers to participate in their 10th annual 10K run and 5K beach walk through the beautiful and scenic Anastasia State Park on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 7:30 a.m.
This is a cross country run and participants must be fit to run or walk on soft sand, uneven terrain, mixed pavement types, sun exposure, heat, and humidity. There will be a practice run on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 7:30 a.m.
“We are still accepting registrations and welcoming volunteers,” Park Services Specialist Brittany Sims told Historic City News this week. “To download and print registration forms, visit the Endless Summer Run website at www.endlesssummerrun.org. If you are interested in volunteering, please call (904) 461-2035.”
The Friends of Anastasia State Park is an organization composed of local volunteers that provide services and host fundraisers to preserve the natural and cultural resources within the Anastasia State Park. Proceeds from the Endless Summer Run will enable the park to host new community and educational events for the enjoyment of local citizens and visitors.
Later this month, on Saturday, September 28th, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Anastasia State Park will have several activities taking place as part of the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands: National Public Lands Day.
Locally there will be a water quality monitoring activity by the beach, accompanied by a display from the Coast Guard Auxiliary on marine debris. A beach clean-up will follow. There will also be a geo-caching activity followed by a nature trail clean-up. The St Johns County Beekeeping Association will exhibit a model beehive and offer samples of honey to taste; as they present a program explaining the importance of bees to the ecosystem.
