Police beat: HistoricCity 9-1-1

Historic City News received the following update from Mark Samson, spokesman for the St Augustine Police Department, to inform readers about recent calls and arrests made by the local police.

Employees at the Panama Hat Co. summoned police to 46 St. George St. to report a black male stole six hats valued at $165.80 and left the store without paying. Officer David Tyus responded to the call. He sent a description of the shoplifter to other officers who found a person who matched the description.

The man, Walter Stevens, who resides at 149 McLaughlin Street, was identified by a store employee who signed a Charging Affidavit. The complaint will be forwarded to the Office of the State Attorney to determine what action will be taken. Samson said that Stevens had disposed of the hats at some point before he was located and stopped by the police.

Qabid Turner was stopped on West King Street for not wearing a seat belt. During the stop the officer ran his name in FCIC/ NCIC and found Turner had an outstanding St Johns County arrest warrant. Turner was cuffed and transported to the County Jail.

While on patrol, Officer Daniel Lui observed two men fighting on the sidewalk in front of Osteen’s Restaurant, located at 205 Anastasia Boulevard. Lui gave verbal commands to stop fighting. When the men did not stop, Lui deployed his pepper spray on both men.

After Lui was able to gain control, he and other officers attempted to determine the reason for the altercation. Both men, 21-year-old Aaron Ammer who lives at 263 South Matanzas Boulevard in St Augustine and 23-year-old Matthew Stocks who lives on Tintern Lane in St Augustine, received minor abrasions from the fight. Both men were arrested for disorderly conduct and transported to the St Johns County Detention Facility without further incident.
