Fully certified lifeguards return to beaches

Memorial Day weekend marks the official beginning of beach season for Historic City News readers in St Augustine and St Johns County. This year, a team of United States Lifesaving Association certified beach lifeguards will begin their assignments on Saturday, May 24, from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. daily.

Lifeguards will staff about 16 lifeguard towers, according to Lieutenant Jeremy Robshaw.

“Supervisors will be mobile; traveling the coastline in various emergency response vehicles,” Robshaw explained. “Coastal stations will be manned by career St Johns County Fire Rescue personnel who have been certified as ocean rescue responders; able to supplement all emergency responses, 24-hours-a-day.”

Lifeguard towers will remain fully staffed until Labor Day weekend, which traditionally marks the conclusion of the beach season.
