Homicide Investigator Cpl. Pete Young reported a fatal single-vehicle crash in Bunnell this morning after the driver reportedly passed out behind the wheel while traveling east on Moody Boulevard.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 49-year-old Dewey Bernard Thompson, who resided at 1354 Sherwood Street in Bunnell, was driving his 2001 Honda 2-door; accompanied by his 25-year-old son, Robert J Thompson.
Thompson worked at Contemporary Machinery & Engineering Services.
The passenger told troopers that when his father passed out, he steered the vehicle into the Flagler County Library parking lot, located at 103 East Moody Boulevard. The front of the Honda struck a guy-wire and palm tree before coming to a stop — facing east, against the palm tree, behind the Flagler County Library.
Firefighter paramedic David Duesek, Flagler Fire Rescue Engine 92, pronounce the driver dead at the scene at 6:43 a.m. The driver’s son, Robert, was unharmed in the crash. The district medical examiner took custody of the remains in order to determine what caused Dewey Thompson’s death.
