Politics in St Johns holds limited straw poll

Historic City News was on hand as about 100-150 of those in attendance and working various candidate tables at Politics in St Johns took a break from speeches, handshaking, and some obligatory baby-kissing to sample the Mojo Bar B Que.

An un-scientific “Straw Poll”, under the direction of St Johns County Supervisor of Elections, Vicky Oakes, was available for each registered attendee.

There was no charge to participate in the Straw Poll, according to Carol Saviak, coordinator for the annual event.

Hundreds of area residents gathered at the Solomon Calhoun Center to meet candidates and cast their vote in a straw poll during Politics in St. Johns, a St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce event.

Thirty-six candidates, seeking an array of local, state and federal offices participated and were given time to address the crowd that gathered inside the youth sports complex on Duval Street.

Among the winners were incumbent Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater and Florida State Senator and incumbent John Thrasher, who was first elected to the Florida Senate in 2009; both candidates were in attendance.
