Historic City News was informed that NASCAR driver Scott Lagasse Jr., Jimmie Johnson, and about 60 other riders took part in the 4th Annual “Champions for Bicycle Safety” Ride today.
The ride continues to gain popularity with several NASCAR drivers and professional athletes committed to helping Lagasse spread the message of cyclist safety on the roads.
With an escort of 24 police officers from the St Augustine Police Department, St Johns County Sheriff’s Office, St Augustine Beach Police Department, Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, and Daytona Beach Police Department, the “Champions Ride” began and ended in Victory Lane at Daytona International Speedway.
Riders cycled through Tomoka Marsh State Aquatic Preserve and along the dunes of the Atlanta Ocean.
Celebrity participants included professional triathletes and cyclists like Hawaii Ironman world champion Leanda Cave, cyclocross champion Tim Johnson, American Olympian triathlete Jarrod Shoemaker and fellow pro triathlete Alica Kaye. In addition to Lagasse, NASCAR Drivers, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, Chase Elliott, Jamie McMurray, Daniel Suarez, Aric Almirola and Justin Allgaier participated, as well as NASCAR EVP Steve Phelps.
