Flagler makes America’s 100 Best College Buys

Media Specialist Liz Daube reported to Historic City News that for the 10th time, “America’s 100 Best College Buys” has included Flagler College in it’s annual report of the nation’s top values in higher education.

Flagler is the only independent college in Florida listed in the 2008-2009 report.

The top 100 college buys are selected by surveys of more than 1,400 accredited colleges and universities. In addition to low costs of tuition, room, board and other fees, institutions are included in the guide for having an incoming freshman class with a high school grade point average and/or SAT/ACT score equal to or above the national average.

“America’s 100 Best College Buys” is produced by Institutional Research & Evaluation, Inc., an independent research and consulting organization specializing in the recruiting and retention of students for institutions of higher education. Institutions are included in the best buys report solely on the basis of merit.

The survey found the national average cost of college attendance for 2008-2009 to be $28,051, based on the regular cost at private institutions and the out-of-state cost at public institutions. At a cost of $19,330 for room, tuition, board and fees, Flagler College is one of the most affordable, independent, four-year colleges in the nation.

“U.S. News & World Report” and The Princeton Review also regularly feature Flagler as a college that offers quality education at a relatively low cost.

Flagler College is an independent, four-year, comprehensive baccalaureate college located in St. Augustine, Fla. The college offers 25 majors, 27 minors and two pre-professional programs, the largest majors being business, education and communication. Small by intent, Flagler College has an enrollment of about 2,500 students, as well as a satellite campus at Tallahassee Community College in Tallahassee, Fla.

A relatively young institution (founded in 1968), Flagler College is also noted for the historic beauty of its campus. The main building is Ponce de Leon Hall, built in 1887 as a luxury resort by Henry Flagler, who co-founded the Standard Oil Company with John D. Rockefeller.
