Should you take the time to look in the downtown area, as so many have, since the 1868 establishment of Memorial Day, you will find memorials to the dead. See the Seminole War dead under the pyramids at the small National Cemetery on Marine Street. Many individual graves are there from several wars.

According to her vision statements, Kim Kendall thinks that government assets can be better managed by private corporations; but, there have been numerous examples of private companies having to be bailed out by the people and government.

Thursday night, St Augustine Record opinion editor, Jim Sutton, told deputies with the St Johns County Sheriff’s Office that his prescription sleeping pills overtook his ability to focus on his driving; he lost control of his vehicle, and, according to the incident report obtained by Historic City News, hit a street light pole, a mailbox, and attempted to drive back to his home on the adjacent street.

Consider, for a moment, some of the acts like Steve Miller, The Moody Blues, Dierks Bentley, Darius Rucker and Carlos Santana that have performed so far this year at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre. Just in the last week, Alison Krauss, Willie Nelson and Jack Johnson have all performed to sold-out crowds in the nation’s oldest city.

Memorial Day is the informal start of summer for most Americans. Across the First Coast from Fernandina Beach to Flagler Beach, stores, restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions will transition from winter staffing and scheduling to the hustle and bustle of summer. This is a good thing for a nation built on free enterprise.
