In a communication from Kristy Weeks, Historic City News was asked to announce that Cubans living in Baracoa are confronting unprecedented pain and suffering and need our help following recent tropical storm damage from hurricanes Gustav, Hanna and Ike.
On August 30th, hurricane Gustav barreled through the Isle of Youth and Pinar del Rio, severely or totally destroying 100,000 homes, wiping out farms, factories, schools, healthcare facilities and most of the people’s personal belongings.
Only days later, hurricane Hanna flooded large areas of that country with intense rainfall and sea penetration.
On September 10th, hurricane Ike crashed into Baracoa and carved a trail of destruction from the easternmost part of Cuba towards the west, encompassing the entire nation in a never before seen calamity.
Weeks says, “We cannot ignore our closest neighbors in these trying moments. We have a partial container scheduled for delivery to Baracoa in November and need the community’s help in order to fill the container with much needed supplies.”
The St. Augustine-Baracoa Friendship Association has been certified by the IRS as a non-profit organization under Section 501(C)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The association is one of the few organizations that continues to have a license from the State Department to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba and to monitor its distribution there.
All donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Written acknowledgments will be issued for all contributions.
You can learn more about the participants and mission of the association by visiting their website at www.staugustine-baracoa.org
Weeks asks that those interested in making a contribution please earmark a check or money order as “Hurricane Relief” payable to “St. Augustine-Baracoa Friendship Association”, and mail it to The Friendship Association, PO Box 861086, St. Augustine, Florida 32086.
