St. Johns County Fire Rescue Public Information Officer Jeremy Robshaw reported to Historic City News today that they will be conducting a special operations rescue drill Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at the Bridge of Lions construction site.
The drill has been coordinated by St. Johns County Fire Rescue Special Operations and the Skanska construction company.
St. Johns County firefighters, with cooperation from the St. Augustine Fire Department, St. Augustine Police Department and the Florida Wildlife Commission, will conduct a simulated rescue of a suspended “worker” from the new bridge that is currently under construction.
The drill will be conducted on the western portion of the bridge span.
The city fire department will assist St. Johns County Fire Rescue with the rope rescue occurring on the bridge, while additional department resources will assist with up and downstream water safety coverage.
The simulated rescue will be completed twice during the day.
The first scenario is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and the second is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
