Sergeant Charles Mulligan told local news reporters that the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a 43 year-old man for Burglary to an Occupied Dwelling and (2) Counts of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer.
Deputies responded to a residence in the 1300 block of Shore Drive early this afternoon to investigate a report of an in-progress burglary.
According to deputies at the scene, Mulligan said, the suspect had backed his car into the driveway of the victim’s home. The suspect entered a carport storage building and began to remove items and placing them in his car.
The suspect, who was identified as; Calvin Dwayne Wideman, 08/30/1966, 5’11”, 230lbs, who resides at 1067 Puryear Street, drove past the first responding deputy who identified the vehicle and notified other deputies in the area.
The suspect drove his vehicle directly at one deputy who was on foot; attempting to motion the driver to stop. Wideman caused the deputy to dive out of the away of the fleeing vehicle.
As deputies attempted to catch the vehicle, Wideman crashed into a truck at the intersection of SR 312 and US1. Deputies secured the suspect and summoned St. Johns County Fire Rescue to evaluate Wideman; who complained of injuries resulting from the crash.
Twenty five rolls of paper products, toilet paper and paper towels, had been taken from the victim’s carport. They were recovered and returned to the homeowner.
Wideman was transported to Flagler Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
The Florida Highway Patrol is conducting the crash investigation.
