March 2010 – Florida Archaeology Month

Amber Grafft-Weiss, Outreach Coordinator for the Florida Public Archaeology Network Northeast Region, updated Historic City News about local events planned to celebrate Florida Archaeology Month.

Florida Archaeology Month 2010 celebrates Florida’s mound building traditions. This theme explores American Indian mounds, including how mounds are defined and constructed, mound functions, and the relationship of Florida sites to broader Southeastern mound building cultures.

Florida Archaeology Month is coordinated by the Florida Anthropological Society, and supported by the Department of State, Division of Historical Resources. Additional sponsors for 2010 include the Florida Archaeological Council, Florida Public Archaeology Network, state and local museums, historical commissions, libraries, and public and private school systems.
