Historic City News was on the scene when St. Johns County Fire Rescue joined the St. Augustine Airport, St. Johns County Airport Authority, St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office and Northrop Grumman in a joint Airport Rescue Drill this Morning, Friday June, 4th.
The exercise began at 8:55 a.m. on the tarmac at the Northeast Florida Regional Airport at St. Augustine.
Responders were faced with an aircraft crash scenario consisting of a commercial aircraft carrying 25-35 passengers that crashes during an emergency landing.
Responders encountered multiple victims, fire and smoke.
“Crews operate and respond just as if this is an actual incident,” said Jeremy Robshaw, Public Education and Information Officer for St. Johns Fire Rescue. “This includes mitigating the crash site, providing treatment and transportation of multiple patients suffering from significant, traumatic injuries.”
The drill site for this morning’s training exercises was just north of the Northeast Florida Regional Airport at St. Augustine in the area of the hanger and passenger parking.
Brian Cooper, with the St. Johns County Airport Authority, told reporters that the local airport hopes our people will never have to contend with the situations they will face in training.” He added, “but we are preparing them, just in case.”
