Elizabeth Duncan has invited all Historic City News readers to attend the 5th Annual ACCORD Freedom Trail Luncheon being held on Saturday, July 2, 2011, at the Casa Monica Hotel located at 95 Cordova Street in St. Augustine.
The keynote speaker this year will be Dr. Dorothy Cotton; former Educational Director for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and top female aide to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
While developing local leadership in the deep south and promoting nonviolent social change, Dr. Cotton directed the Citizen Education Program. She was in Oslo, Norway with an entourage that accompanied Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to receive his Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
The luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and tickets are still available.

The luncheon commemorates the 47th Anniversary of the signing of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 and also features guest speaker Sonya Y. Plummer; granddaughter of Civil Rights Leader, the Late Rev. Goldie M. Eubanks, Sr. Sonya is the second child of civil rights activist, Dorothy Eubanks-Hardin. She resides in Melbourne with her husband and 15 year-old son.
Special Recognition will be given to Lillian Twine-Roberson; civil rights activist and sister to former Vice-Mayor and Commissioner the Late Henry Twine. Roberson’s Gault Street home was firebombed by the Ku Klux Klan — only the steps and an ACCORD Freedom Trail marker remain at the lot in North City.
The Late Esther Burgess, civil rights activist from New Haven, Connecticut, who was the wife of the first Black Episcopal Bishop in the United States and arrested during a sit-in at the Ponce de Leon restaurant with Mary Peabody, the 72-year old mother of Governor of Massachusetts, will be posthumously recognized and honored for her courageous acts displayed during the St. Augustine Movement. Some of her family members will be in attendance from Connecticut during the luncheon.
