Historic City News readers have reason to celebrate today — in 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt announced the end of coffee rationing in the United States.
The rationing plan began in November 1942 and limited people to one pound of coffee every five weeks.
As part of the nation’s support of the war effort in WWII, Roosevelt also imposed a nationwide gasoline rationing that went into effect December 1, 1942.
Historic City News readers determined in an unscientific poll this morning that although residents could live with gasoline rationing today, coffee rationing would likely cause rioting in the streets.
Today is Thursday, July 28, the 209th day of 2011. There are 156 days left in the year.
