In this morning’s St. Johns County Commission meeting, Historic City News reporters were on hand as members made a presentation to Cathy Brown, signifying the importance of our senior citizen population in commemoration of Older Americans Month.
A proclamation naming the month of May in St. Johns County as “Older Americans Month” was presented to Brown; who is a leader and advocate for the dignity, independence and health of older St. Johns County residents.
Since 1973, the Council on Aging has served as the gateway to information and opportunity for the St. Augustine and St. Johns County elder communities. Brown is Executive Director of the St. Johns County Council on Aging, Inc. located in the River House located at 180 Marine Street in St. Augustine. Council on Aging operates the Sunshine Bus Company; which provides transportation services to residents of all ages.
Brown says that the purpose of the Council on Aging is to provide opportunity for every person in St. Johns County to enjoy wellness, longevity and quality of life choices within a strong, healthy community.
“There are subsidized senior programs and senior services for those aged 60 and over,” Brown said of Council on Aging. “But, there are many activities that are open to any one of any age.”
