Patti Henderson reported to Historic City News that since 2004, Public Law 108-444 has required schools to hold an educational program to commemorate the September 17, 1787 signing of the United States Constitution.
This year, 7th and 12th grade students in St. Johns County will receive one of 5,000 pocket-sized copies of the document donated by the St. Johns County Tea Party and Randy Covington.
“The St. Johns County Tea Party and I are grateful to the School District for granting us the opportunity to make this contribution to the civic education of our children,” said Covington. “As young citizens, we want students to better understand the importance the Constitution plays in maintaining the freedoms we all enjoy.”
Several members of the St. Johns County Tea Party were on hand to present these pocket Constitutions to Ted Banton, Social Sciences for the School District, and Kelly Battell, Principal of Sebastian Middle School.
The week of September 17th through the 23rd is designated as “Constitution Week” in our schools; Congress designated September 17th of each year as “Constitution Day”.
In addition to the pocket-sized Constitutions, teacher’s guides and Constitution posters were also presented.
