Teen Read Week Fan-fiction Contest
Saturday, October 1 through Friday, October 21 – Ever wonder what would happen if two characters from different anime met? Or what if you have an idea for a brand new Superman story? Now, for Teen Read Week, you can share those short stories about your favorite anime, graphic novel, or video game characters with us and earn prizes! It is simple to win. Just write an original short story and turn it in at the Main Library between October 1st and 21st. Two winners will receive a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card. The winners will be announced at the JAAM meeting on October 31st. This contest is for teens and young adults, ages 12-22. For more details call 904-827-6940.

Digital Photography Workshop Series
Saturday, October 8 @ 10 & 11 am – 2010 Best of St. Augustine Winner and award-winning photographer, Kate Gardiner, will walk you through the basic steps to getting the most out of your digital camera! This is the perfect opportunity to turn your summer vacation pictures into extraordinary images.
Saturday, October 8 @ 10 am: Part 1: Learning the Ropes, This introduction covers everything from turning your “point & shoot” digital camera on, to choosing the proper setting for each situation.
Saturday, October 8 @ 11 am: Part 2: Taking the Next Step, This more advanced photography class will explore basic photography principles, and how to use them to take a better photograph. What to bring to each class: Your own digital camera (with charged battery and memory card) and the instruction manual for your camera. Brainmatternow: “Cut the FAT”
Mondays, October 10 & 17 @ 2, 4, & 6 pm – Did you know your “gut is the second brain?” Without too much thought you can become obese, costing yourself thousands and the nation billions. Where do the dollars go? How do we cut spending? How about take the “fat” out of the budget and our own bodies to increase everyone’s health and wellness? Come find out at the Main Library! You will be entertained by an informative exhibit and 3 film showings featuring: “FAT: What No One Is Telling You” – a PBS documentary on the struggles and solutions to obesity, which includes 100 ways to eat healthier & 100 ways to do 2,000 steps a day. Fire Safety Storytimes with Smokey Bear
Thursday, October 13 @ 11 & 11:30 am – Children and their caregivers are invited to celebrate Fire Prevention Month with this special storytime visit by Smokey Bear! Smokey will teach children about the dangers of wildfires, not to play with matches, and how they can stay safe. Presented by our friends from the Florida Forest Service.
Writing Workshop: “What Agents Expect from Authors”
Saturday, October 15 @ 10:15 am – Join us when literary agent and author Holly McClure visits to discuss what agents expect from authors. Holly is passionate about writing and publishing business. With so many ways for an author to be robbed of their hard-earned money, this agent feels that educating writers is the best protection against scams and iffy business decisions. Holly is also a multi-published author of mainstream mysteries and young adult novels. Sponsored by the Ancient City Chapter of the Florida Writer’s Association and the Friends of the Library.
Voice of the Dolphins with Hardy Jones
Saturday, October 15 @ 2 pm – In The Voice of the Dolphins, award-winning filmmaker, Hardy Jones describes three decades of work with dolphins. In 1978 Jones produce a film documenting dolphins in their natural habitat, a feat considered impossible by marine experts. With a small crew, Jones worked with an unusually friendly school of dolphins in the Bahamas to create his first film Dolphin. Jones has since made several films for PBS, National Geographic, Discovery, and co-founded Bluevoice.org to protect dolphins and whales. Join us for a riveting presentation by Hardy Jones, featuring clips from some of his documentaries.

Not for the Faint of Heart Shadow Puppet Theatre
Monday, October 24 @ 6 pm – Join us for three creepy tales brought to life as shadow puppet theatre. In The Red Ribbon, a gentleman wonders why his wife refuses to remove her red ribbon until her dying day. The Creature Who Came to Dinner tells of a dragon who disrupts a royal feast leading to a duel to the death between the king and the dragon. In The Bones of Fred Mcfee, a “toy” skeleton at Halloween provides menace and mystery. Enjoy the stories with some bone-chilling snow cone treats! This program is recommended for older children, teens and adults.
Socks to Dye For, Sweet Spookies & S’mores
Tuesday, October 25 @ 6 pm – The whole family is invited to join us for an evening of tie-dying socks and edible crafting fun. You provide a pair of white or lightly colored socks to tie-dye, and we’ll supply the dye in Halloween colors! And bring your sweet tooth as we craft some sweet, spooky creatures to eat, roast some indoor s’mores, and cool off with some candy corn snow cones.

Scooby Doo & the Pumpkin Hullabaloo
Wednesday, October 26 @ 2 pm – Children of all ages are invited to join us in celebrating the arrival of Halloween with Scooby Doo and the rest of the spook-busting, case-cracking Mystery, Inc. gang. Kids can paint and decorate a small pumpkin to take home, and then snuggle up on our comfy pillow seating for an airing of one Scooby’s frightening adventures! Pumpkins and Scooby snacks provided by the Friends of the Library.
Family Friendly Halloween Film
Wednesday, October 26 @ 6 pm – Lovable dog, Zeus, and his family the Bannisters have moved into a new house, just in time for Halloween. Everything seems to be going well until they notice strange lights and sounds coming from neighbor Ell’s house. When George takes it upon himself to find out what is going on, he and his wife get trapped in the spook house, leaving only Zeus to save Halloween.
Lil’ Pumpkin Patch Party
Thursday, October 27 @ 10 am – Little pumpkins have a Halloween party of their very own in our toddler and preschool un-scary party and parade! Carnival-style games, yummy treats & prizes, Halloween snow cones, and a shadow puppet show add up to a pumpkin patch of fun for little ones! Come in costume for a parade through the library. Be sure to bring your camera; it’s going to be super-cute! This FREE program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
Adult BINGO for BOO-ks
Friday, October 28 @ 3:30 pm – Do you love free books, dressing up in costume for Halloween, and playing BINGO? Come out, make new friends, and win adult fiction and non-fiction books by playing BINGO. Everyone is guaranteed to go home with at least one free book. Book prizes are generously donated by the Friends of the Library. Everyone is welcome and it’s FREE! Come in a costume and receive a library bag to take your winnings home in.
BATastic: “Our Incredible Bat Friends”
Saturday, October 29 @ 3 pm – No, bats are not scary and don’t fly around with vampires! Bats are amazing bug eaters with important roles to play in our local ecosystem. Join bat enthusiast, Marcia Daniels as she teaches us about the amazing bats found in our area! This FREE program is sure to be fun for the whole family.

Halloween J.A.A.M.
Monday, October 31 @ 5 pm – Anime enthusiasts, ages 12-22, are invited to the special Halloween meeting of our monthly anime club, where you can meet others with similar interests. We’ll be viewing a creepy anime feature, and enjoying Japanese candy & snow cones. Come in costume if you’d like to participate in our costume contest, for a chance to win $25 gift cards to local stores! The winners of our Fan-fiction Contest will also be announced, so be sure to write a short story for Teen Read Week.
