Build the ship fundraiser
The St Augustine Maritime Heritage Foundation announced to local Historic City News reporters that Ann O’Malley’s Pub, located at 23 Orange Street in St Augustine, will sponsor a special “Build the Ship” fundraiser on Sunday, July 29, from noon until 5:00 p.m.
Proceeds from the sale of food and beverages during the five-hour event, served by our local celebrity waiters, will benefit the St Augustine Maritime Heritage Foundation.
The St Augustine Maritime Heritage Foundation has three main goals:
• To build seaworthy 16th century watercraft at the Fountain of Youth Archeological Park in a traditional 16th century manner for the 450th commemoration and beyond while utilizing locally sourced labor, materials and skills.
• To stimulate greater utilization and dependency of our harbor and adjacent waterways by encouraging increased commercial and recreational boating as an alternative to congested road traffic.
• To support educational programs that benchmark our maritime history and record current and future maritime events by instituting accredited scholastic maritime courses for students and troubled youth.
Construction of the 37-foot Chalupa, a 16th Century multi-purpose vessel, and its boat house, Fuego del Mar, is progressing quickly at the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park.
This collaborative project is being carried out in partnership with the St Augustine Maritime Heritage Foundation and the Lighthouse Archaeology Maritime Program at the St Augustine Lighthouse and Museum; which continues to provide historically accurate research details.
The ship’s keel has been laid in the boat shed as construction on this structure continues with the help of project volunteers with over 128 volunteers having raised their hands to help with this fantastic project.
