Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas National Monuments will each open at noon today, a precaution Superintendent Gordie Wilson has taken due to the uncertain weather conditions created by Tropical Storm Beryl.
The seventeenth and eighteenth century fortresses have withstood much worse; however, Gordie expressed public safety concerns, telling Historic City News reporters in St Augustine, “We want to make certain we do everything we can to insure the safety of our visitors and our employees.”
Cleanup is underway at the Castillo and Fort Matanzas this morning from overnight storm damage. “We do not want to put anyone in harm’s way as we recover from the impacts of this storm,” Gordie said.
