Crash shuts down Bridge of Lions

Posted on 08/01/201208/02/2012 By Historic City News

From a web camera atop the Wells Fargo Bank building on Cathedral Place, Historic City News reporters have been monitoring the conditions on the Bridge of Lions this afternoon following a two-car collision, which sent the driver of one vehicle to the hospital by helicopter.

According to a spokesman for the St Augustine Police Department, a man was driving a small pickup truck eastbound across the bridge, when he crashed through the guard gates as the bridge was preparing to open.

The truck hit another vehicle in the process and overturned.

The driver, whose identity has not be released at this time, exited the truck, stripped off his clothes and ran towards the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument where he was stopped by police.

He was flown by air ambulance to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center — the nature and extent of his injuries are yet unknown.
