Just after noon today, 39 year-old Deputy Gregory A Dubowsky suffered critical injuries in a car-vs-motorcycle collision that occurred in the 2800 block of SR-A1A in Ponte Vedra Beach as he was giving escort to a local charity motorcycle run.
Motorcycle officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and St Johns County Sheriff’s Office were assisting in an event benefit “Rides for Smiles”, a charitable organization who provides medical treatment for children.
The ride began in Jacksonville this morning on a route through St Augustine and then back into Jacksonville.
During the escort, Deputy Dubowsky, who has been with St Johns County Sheriff’s Office since 1996, stopped a motorist for failure to obey traffic control directions from one of the other officers.
After the stop, Dubowsky rejoined the escort as they proceeded towards the City of St Augustine.
According to information from the crash scene, as Dubowsky approached the entourage with his lights and sirens activated, a Fiat, driven by Joan Wilke of Illinois, entered the roadway and collided with Dubowsky’s motorcycle.
The deputy is in critical condition at Shands Hospital Jacksonville where he is expected to undergo surgery for multiple injuries.
The Florida Highway Patrol is conducting the investigation into the crash. Charges are pending against the driver of the Fiat. It has not been determined if alcohol contributed to the collision at this time.
