Historic City News has learned additional details from St Augustine Police Department sources in yesterday’s arrest of 43 year-old Miguel Angel Gonell who remains in custody this afternoon in lieu of $100,000 bond.
Police spokesman Mark Samson was able to confirm that on Wednesday evening, a disabled adult woman notified police that she had been physically injured by Gonell. Although the victim is legally blind, when the attack occurred, a sighted witness observed the incident and accompanied the victim to the police station to make a report.
Officers located Gonell on King Street and brought him back to the police station for questioning. Investigators were able to validate the victim’s story and develop sufficient evidence to make the arrest.
Samson said Gonell committed “an intentional act that could reasonably be expected to result in physical or psychological injury” against the victim, whose identity is being protected.
The investigation is ongoing, and Samson reported that additional charges against Gonell could be forthcoming.
