Things ended peacefully in Elkton about an hour ago, when members of the Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiations Team were able to successfully enter and remove a despondent man from his home, after a SWAT standoff, then transport him to Flagler Hospital in St Augustine for medical evaluation.
Historic City News learned that officers were called to a home in the 4000 block of Bradley Street at about 6:30 p.m., according to a report from Corporal Catherine Payne.
Deputies initially responded to check on the welfare of the elderly resident, who was reportedly hopeless and irrational.
When deputies contacted him, the man displayed a knife then backed into the residence and barricaded himself. A SWAT team responded to the scene.
Negotiations were ongoing for about an hour; however, the man was in the home alone and deputies were able to remove him without incident or injury — to himself, of any of the emergency personnel responding.
