FSDB offer summer camps for impaired children

The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind informed local Historic City News reporters that they would host several summer camps at the St Augustine campus for children who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or visually impaired.

The camps below are free and for children of all ages and open to Florida residents who are not currently enrolled at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind.

The school will take applications for the summer camps through June 8th. The camps listed below offer on-campus dormitory overnight stays, 24-hour supervision, meals and snacks, and access to the 24-hour on-site Health Care Center.

• Summer Quest, which takes place June 17-22, is open to children ages 8-14 and entails a
variety of educational and recreational activities to include swimming, arts and crafts,
sports, performing arts and more.

• Family Weekend, scheduled on June 22-24, is a specially planned weekend for families of children with sensory impairments. The event includes tours of the campus and workshops to assist families in learning about programs and resources provided for students at FSDB.
Families will reside on campus to experience first-hand the FSDB living environment.

• Leadership Camp, scheduled on June 24-29, is open to children ages 13-17. This experiences offers programs focused on leadership, independence skills and teamwork. Deaf and hard of hearing children will focus on preparing for an independent future and job readiness, and blind or visually impaired children will focus on orientation and mobility and using adaptive technology.

Additionally, FSDB offers a Summer Day Camp from June 18-29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. that is open to both FSDB-enrolled and non-enrolled children ages 5-12 who live in the local area and are within driving distance of St. Augustine. This camp provides participating children with opportunities to be involved in activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, rock climbing, kayaking and more.
