Ghost Bike installed at scene of hit-and-run

Historic City News reader, Felicia Regan, attended this weekend’s installation ceremony held in honor of Christian Schroom; when a “ghost bike” was dedicated to his memory to commemorate his tragic death on Anastasia Boulevard, just blocks from his residence.

The Velo Fest Community Initiative installed the ghost bike, donated by Russell Coffee Company, at the corner of Arredondo and Anastasia Boulevard on Saturday, November 24th.

Schroom was killed earlier this week by a hit-and-run driver.

According to a report from an area business, surveillance video of the location shows that two separate vehicles struck the victim on Anastasia Boulevard just after midnight. Police and investigators are canvassing neighborhoods and analyzing evidence collected at the scene.

According to the victim’s nephew, Christian absolutely loved getting to see the city from his bicycle.

“We hope that this bicycle inspires a culture that embraces the safety of all pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, and serves as a reminder of how much of a privilege and responsibility we have as we use our roads,” a Velo Fest spokesperson, Heather Neville, said. “When law enforcement identifies those responsible for this tragedy, we are hoping family and friends will find some closure.”
