Historic City News has learned that 50 year-old John Thomas Olsen, passed away at his home on Venetian Boulevard in St Augustine on Friday, June 15th.
Olsen was a detective corporal when he left the St Augustine Police Department in November 2006. He had been with the department for 18 years and served in several capacities.
“John was the best Santa Claus I ever worked with,” said Renee’ Morris; a retired St Augustine Police officer who is now the Director of St Francis House and a friend of Olsen. “He was a funny jolly guy.”
His raspy baritone voice made his rendition of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” a popular request at parties.
A memorial will be held in his honor 2:00 p.m. on Thursday June 28, 2012, at Craig Funeral Home.
A celebration of John’s life will be held immediately following the memorial at the home of his eldest son; located at 3443 Forest Boulevard, Southside Estates in Jacksonville.
Olsen is survived by his close family, friends, and his police family of the St Augustine Police Department.
