When Nello Joseph Mariotti moved to St Augustine in 1956, he founded one of the city’s most recognized businesses; with a name familiar to anyone who drives past their location on South Ponce de Leon Boulevard — Mariotti’s Laundry and Dry Cleaners.
Mariotti passed away on September 7, 2004, but the company that bears his name continues; only now, the main location has taken up residence in the former Foodway building on West King Street, about two blocks away.
When visiting Mariotti’s new location, Historic City News readers will find on display at the customer service counter several antique pieces of laundry equipment that date back to the 1800’s.
Walking into the new location, you would think they had been there all along. All the shirts and garments neatly hanging on a motorized conveyor, the store decorated in familiar colors and the blue neon Mariotti’s sign glowing in the window make customers feel right at home.
The new location at 198 West King Street in St Augustine is open for business and all garments from the former location can be picked up at the new store. Hours of operation are Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., closed Sunday.
