At about 10:18 p.m. last night, Historic City News received word from the Florida Highway Patrol traffic homicide unit that a hit-and-run crash between an unknown vehicle and a 43-year-old St Augustine man, riding his Schwinn Beach Cruiser, has left the bicyclist in critical condition and a search for the driver of the fleeing vehicle is underway.
The victim, Randy Wayne Miller, who lives on Daveston Avenue, off of SR-16 east of Four Mile Road, was traveling eastbound on SR-16 in the designated bike lane. As Miller approached the Four Mile Road intersection, the unknown vehicle attempted to change lanes; from the outside driving lane into the right turn lane.
The left-front of the unknown vehicle struck Miller as he entered the right turn lane; throwing the victim off the bicycle, causing about $100 in damages to the bike, and inflicting critical injuries on the bicyclist.
St Johns Fire Rescue reported that the patient was transported to Flagler Hospital in St Augustine for emergency treatment and later flown to UF Health Jacksonville; his condition is not known at this time.
