Charges are pending this morning in a crash that sent a New Smyrna Beach woman to the hospital with serious injuries and killed a horse she had in tow, after an armored truck lost control and crossed the center line into her path on a two-lane section of SR-100 in Flagler County yesterday.
Florida Highway Patrol investigators informed Historic City News last night that at 3:20 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 55-year-old Kathleen K. Stevens of New Smyrna Beach was traveling eastbound on SR-100 towards Bunnell, east of CR-305; driving a 2009 Chevy Silverado pickup truck, towing a trailer with one horse on board.
The driver of a 2004 Ford Armored Truck traveling westbound on SR-100, 50-year-old Mario Eugenio Gomez who resides on Canoe Creek Falls Drive in Orlando, told investigators that the vehicle ahead of him stopped to make a left turn onto CR-305, and he braked.
According to Gomez and his passenger, 27-year-old Edwin R. Perez-Feliciano, the armored truck was unable to stop and the driver began to lose control of the vehicle. The armored truck rotated counter-clockwise, and crossed into the eastbound lane — directly into Stevens’ path.
Stevens struck the armored truck and ran off the roadway onto the south shoulder of SR-100; overturning onto its right side and causing about $40,000 in damage. Rescue transported Stevens to Florida Hospital Flagler and on to Halifax Medical Center by air ambulance, with serious injuries. The horse in the trailer did not survive the crash.
Gomez and Perez-Feliciano suffered only minor injuries and sustained about $10,000 in damage to the armored truck.
