Florida Highway Patrol Lt. William “Bill” Leeper reported to Historic City News that a yet unidentified pedestrian is dead after being struck by a tractor-trailer truck on Interstate 95 in the area of mile marker 307 about 10:00 last night.
According to the incident report, 62 year-old Bart Jay Dusauzay who lives in Jacksonville, was driving a 2008 Freightliner Columbia northbound in the outside lane on Interstate 95 when he struck an unidentified man on the highway.
Trooper Howard and Homicide Investigator Cpl. G. Cohn responded to the scene to discover the victim had been walking in the traffic lane; apparently returning to a parked vehicle that was located on the east shoulder of the Interstate.
Dusauzay called E-911 from the scene to report the collision as quickly as he realized what had happened. The driver sustained no injuries, and, according to FHP investigators, was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision. The truck sustained an estimated $5,000 in damage.
The victim was propelled northbound into the roadway after being struck. An autopsy is being performed to determine the identity of the victim and if alcohol was a factor in this traffic fatality.
Charges are pending the results of the autopsy and conclusion of the investigation.
