This afternoon, Moira Hagene spotted a small funnel cloud as it started to develop east of the Northeast Florida Regional Airport at St Augustine; and, as she watched from the observation deck at the Fly By Café, a second funnel cloud began to develop only 300-400 yards away.
Workers at the airport were monitoring the weather activity and report that neither cloud formation interfered with air traffic or normal airport operation.
“I didn’t know what to think when I saw both funnel clouds,” Hagene told reporters. “I’ve seen one touch down before, but never two so close together.”
Former St Johns County Airport Authority commissioner Randy Brunson happened to be at the restaurant shortly after the incident occurred; so he asked Hagene to share her photos and experience with Historic City News readers.
An airport maintenance employee said that he witnessed the clouds as they expanded, then watched each one dissipate before it touched ground.
