Public Information Officer Matthew Sara reported an industrial fire to Historic City News at about 12:44 p.m. today after St Johns County Fire Rescue crews responded to the Hydro-Aluminum plant located at 200 Riviera Boulevard in St Augustine.
Emergency fire personnel had been warned that there were toxic chemicals inside the re-melt building, where flames were generating smoke that could be observed for several miles.
All employees had been evacuated and accounted for by the time first responders arrived.
Sara told Historic City News that an aggressive attack, employing the use of fire-retardant foams, was successful in suppressing the flames within approximately 30 minutes.
Evidence of the cause of the extremely dangerous blaze is being collected and evaluated by the Fire Marshal and local fire investigators.
There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported during this incident.
