Florida Department of Transportation has informed Historic City News that reconstruction of the San Marco Avenue and May Street intersection is on track for completion in December of this year.
As the project moves forward towards completion, the new driveway entrance from US-1 into the Main Branch of the St Johns County Library is scheduled to open on Thursday, August 23rd, weather permitting and barring other unforeseen circumstances. An additional driveway to the library’s overflow parking lot is located just north of the new driveway entrance.
Access to the library and Davenport Park from West San Carlos Avenue will permanently close when the new driveway on US-1 opens. Variable message boards will be displayed on northbound and southbound US-1 and West San Carlos Avenue to provide advanced notice of the new driveway opening.
Readers are asked to exercise caution through the area as motorists and pedestrians become accustomed to the new entrances.
Improvements to reconfigure and widen the roadway will allow for better traffic flow in the area. New pedestrian crosswalk signals and shared bicycle lanes are also included in the intersection improvements.
Drainage improvements on May Street are expected to begin in early 2019 after the widening and reconstruction improvements for San Marco Avenue are completed.
