In Florida’s gubernatorial contest, Historic City News has learned that Republican Ron DeSantis appears headed to victory over Democrat Andrew Gillum after a machine recount did not significantly narrow the margin in that race, according to Secretary of State Ken Detzner.
The machine recount was conducted across the state because the unofficial results submitted by the state’s 67 county elections offices landed the top two candidates less than 0.25 percent apart. Election recounts are rare, the Secretary’s office said. Reversals almost unheard of.
The Secretary set a 3:00 p.m. deadline today to submit results from a statewide machine recount. If the local canvassing boards of the County Supervisors of Elections do not submit recount results, the initial unofficial tally stands, according to state law.
Governor Rick Scott recused himself from the Florida Elections Canvassing Commission this week. On Tuesday, November 20, the commission will meet in Tallahassee to certify the results of the 2018 mid-term election.
