Congressional Art Competition winner named

400-DESANTIS-FIRST-PLACE-ARRep. Ron DeSantis (FL-06) announced to local Historic City News reporters today that Yong Zheng, a student at Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach, took first place in the “2014 Congressional Art Competition” with her ink wash painting titled “Into the Light”. She will receive complimentary airfare for herself and a guest to attend an unveiling ceremony at the United States Capitol, where her artwork will be displayed for one year.

At exactly 10:00 a.m. Capt. Charles Stratman, USN (retired) rang 4 bells signaling the commencement of the decommissioning ceremony for the decades-old landmark in the northeast corner of the Plaza de la Constitution. The bell was presented to Stratman by the crew of the U.S.S. Tallahatchie County. Stratman held the rank of Lieutenant Commander and was the Executive Officer of the ship.

Bacon Nation limps by

300-FUSCO-BACON-1Sometimes the hype is greater than the bang, such was the case for many festival goers attending last weekend’s Bacon Nation Festival at Francis Field in St Augustine. I was excited for the chance to shake hands with the bacon lady, but overall, it left me limp.
