St Augustine’s historic beauty was the inspiration for 70 plein air artists from across the country whose works are featured at the St Augustine Art Association through May 27th. Artistic Excellence awards for the juried exhibition “Where Art Meets History” were handed out during the opening reception, which culminated in a guest appearance by the First Coast Opera.

The City of St Augustine informed local Historic City News reporters that the Adelaide Sanchez Award will be presented to the Lastinger Family Foundation recognizing the organization’s support of historic preservation on Monday, May 14 at 4:00 p.m., just prior to the regular meeting of the St. Augustine City Commission.

Historic City News was notified by Florida Department of Transportation Public Information Officer, Monica R. Reifeiss, that traffic will be impacted at the following St Augustine and St Johns County locations where roadwork is being conducted.

Be alert to lane closures and temporary detours, as well as increased congestion in these areas. FDOT employees and contractors will be working on the roadways and need your full attention.

Improvements to Bridge of Lions begin May 16

The Florida Department of Transportation reported to Historic City News today that their contractor, Astron General Contracting Co. Inc, is scheduled to begin a bridge rehabilitation project on the Bridge of Lions in St. Augustine. The rehabilitation project, termed “minor” by FDOT officials, includes cosmetic improvements, cleaning, painting and electrical work starting Wednesday, May 16, barring dangerous weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
