Kiss the Pig this weekend at Rhythm and Ribs

Learn to Read of St. Johns County, Inc. has asked Historic City News readers to support their organization this weekend during the Rhythm and Ribs Festival in St. Augustine as they present their annual “Kiss the Pig” charity fundraiser.

This year, your $1 donation to “Kiss the Pig” can be submitted to Learn to Read by credit card, mail, at the Festival or, online using Paypal.

“If you are unable to attend in person on Saturday, April 16th, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., you can still send in your votes,” Learn to Read President Hamilton Neal told Historic City News. “You are not limited to one vote — each vote cost $1, so, 100 votes can be cast for $100.”

In 1986, Learn To Read of St. Johns County Inc. was started as an idea that a retired teacher, Ruth Roegner, shared with neighbors and friends in St. Augustine, because there were reports of an alarming level of illiteracy in the United States. Ruth and her neighbor’s first move was to go to Jacksonville, for training and books to help non-readers. Which were gotten from a long-established Laubach Literacy Program in Duval County, named Learn To Read, Inc. Ruth appealed to the local chapter of the American Association of University Women for $250 to get additional books that were needed. Learn to Read is a non-profit and has very few employees. The volunteers and partners are what keep us growing and expanding our services. At Learn to Read we teach more than ABC’s and also specializes in math, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), help with GED testing, or to qualify for a professional certificate. Our Mission is to always help all St. Johns County residents who need help with reading or have other educational needs we can provide.
