Historic City News has learned that while riding his bicycle westward on West King Street this afternoon, 63-year-old Clifford Wayne Johnson, Sr., was struck and killed when he pulled into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
Traffic Homicide investigators are still sorting through the evidence this evening to determine what caused Johnson to pull off the south shoulder of West King Street, striking the approaching vehicle head-on.
St Johns County Fire Rescue reported that Johnson died at the scene.
The crash occurred at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon in the area of South Woodlawn Street, according to Kevin Kelshaw, spokesman for the St Johns County Sheriff’s Office.
Charges against the driver, 23-year-old Eric Isaac, are pending further investigation including the results of toxicology testing.
