After posting $11,000 bond, Historic City News reported the release of 52-year old sexual predator James Lee Lyons of St Johns County, on Friday, July 26th; a warrant for Lyons’ arrest had been issued charging him with animal cruelty and sexual activity involving an animal.
Today, Lyons is back in custody; arrested on additional charges of cruelty to animals, sexual activities involving animals, and failure to properly register as a sexual predator — his second arrest in less than a week.
“One of Lyons’ pretrial release conditions, ordered by Circuit Judge J. Michael Traynor, was that he not have any pets at his residence,” Commander Charles E. Mulligan informed Historic City News reporters.
Animal Control Officers responded today to 7548 US-1 South and removed two dogs that were inside Lyons’ residence.
At the time of his last arrest, Lyons was registered at 437 Gloria Street in St Augustine Shores. Evidence obtained by detectives during the initial investigation revealed that Lyons had been staying at 7548 US-1 South in St Augustine on numerous occasions since the beginning of the year. It was only after his last arrest that Lyons disclosed his US-1 address to authorities.
The two dogs were taken to Matanzas River Animal Hospital for examination this morning. Dr. Nicholas performed an examination on the animals and determined that one of the dogs, a male pit bull, showed no injuries.
The second dog, a 42-pound female terrier mix, had sustained injuries according to the Veterinarian.
“The injuries to this dog’s genitals were appalling,” Dr. Nicolas told investigators. “There is no doubt that this dog has suffered a great amount of pain; in fact, the suffering that this dog endured, and continues to endure during the healing process, cannot be overstated.”
Following treatment, the terrier mix who Lyons says was a stray, will be cared for by St Johns County Animal Control and will be offered for adoption at a later time. The pit bull will also be available for rescue.
Lyons has been granted bail, again. This time, an appearance bond of $61,000 will be required before he is released. Further court dates on the original and new charges are not available at this time.
