Selecting Gary Howell for the Anastasia Mosquito Control District (Seat 5) was the easiest endorsement decision to come before the Historic City News Editorial Review Board this election year. Gary has been a part of this community as long as us. We know what to expect from his contribution as a commissioner.
At its regular meeting today, Historic City News local reporters watched as the St Johns County Board of County Commissioners took action to address the concerning performance of its solid waste provider, FCC Environmental Services.
Recent changes to election laws governing verification of voter signatures on mail-in ballots are a factor in why the St Johns County Supervisor of Elections office has so far rejected 6.9% of those ballots as of Thursday morning. Historic City News has learned that signature rejections locally are much higher than the statewide average of 6.3%.
St Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum reported to Historic City News that three new members have been added to their volunteer board of trustees. The new board members will attend their first meeting on September 26, 2024. The Lighthouse also welcomes its incoming Chairperson, Executive Director Kevin Sweeny.

Judge Kenneth Janesk, of the Seventh Judicial Circuit of Florida, just ruled on a lawsuit brought against Nicole Crosby, “the Anns” handler/campaign manager/marketing advisor. The lawsuit (type in case #CA24-0665), brought by Plaintiff James Higbee, alleges defamation of his character in social media and says that the defamation had a direct impact on his career.

After much research and contemplation, I conclude that Friday’s “red flag” appearance of fake Republican “endorsements” was intended to be discovered quickly and done solely for the PR hype.
With the arrival of their Friday morning mail, local Historic City News reporters found themselves asking, “Will the real St Johns County Republican Executive Committee please stand up?” In a criminal act of blatant voter fraud, the scale of which has not been seen in recent history, registered Republicans throughout St Johns County discovered obscure, plain white envelopes in their mail, addressed to them and containing what purported to be a list of candidates for various offices that were “endorsed” by the Republican Party.
Historic City News confirmed with St Johns County Supervisor of Elections Vicky Oakes, that the following candidates will appear on ballots already being circulated by mail to eligible voters as well as those to be used in the Early Voting process. TODAY, August 8th at 5:00pm, is the deadline to request that a vote-by-mail ballot be sent to you by the Elections Office. To be counted, your properly completed vote-by-mail ballot must be received by the Elections Office not later than 7:00pm on Primary Election Day Tuesday August 20, 2024.
