The City Attorney of St Augustine submitted another legal bill for payment of legal fees to Jacksonville firm Marks Gray in defense of a lawsuit brought by Scott and Donna Wendler after they were denied demolition permits for aging homes along King Street, west of Riberia Street.
In addition to Isabelle Lopez who is the current city attorney, the city also hires an assistant city attorney; yet many legal matters involving litigation, or requiring specific legal expertise, are routinely contracted out to blue chip Jacksonville law firms.
Monday night’s approval was for a single payment of $8,413.74 towards the legal costs from May 1, 2018 through July 31, 2018. However, the accumulated cost of defending this lawsuit has reached $674,605.89. Historic City News readers have often questioned the amount of money spent on legal fees.
