As we prepare for the mid-term elections this fall, Historic City News will be reporting the information you need to know about how elections are conducted in St Johns County. There are some significant changes being implemented this year with more on the horizon. We went to the expert to get the best answers.
The Florida legislature did today what Historic City News reporters expected they would do. Unable to agree on a budget to be presented to Governor Ron DeSantis for approval, they gave themselves an extension, pushing the end of the session to Monday. Despite all the catfights, photo opportunities, pomp and circumstances, approving an annual budget is the only thing the state senators and representatives are required to do.
Older and lower-income Americans are four times more likely to make all, or almost all, of their purchases with cash. But at least for now, those consumers may face a growing number of merchants who are unwilling to accept their money.
The legislature is taking local government entities to task in hopes of putting a stop to unnecessary and ill-advised ordinances that put an unnecessary burden on local businesses. Historic City News has been following this issue with great interest since we see problems ahead with its enforcement if adopted.

Historic City News founder Michael Gold got bad news in the mailbox this week, and he finds out that he is just one of many local homeowners facing soaring homeowner insurance premiums this year. The personal lines manager at Ancient City Insurance had already warned that “there was a significant increase in the premium” charged by Gainesville-based Tower Hill Insurance Company. The annual premium under the former policy was about $1,200, however, under the renewal in another program through Tower Hill, this year’s coverage would be nearly $2,500 if accepted.
