St Johns County announces Holiday hours

Veterans Day
All departments of the St Johns County Board of County Commissioners, St Johns County Administrative offices, and the Pet Center will be closed Friday, November 10 in observance of Veterans Day. All St Johns County library branches will be closed Saturday, November 11. All offices and branches will resume standard business hours for Historic City News readers on Monday, November 13.

Tuesday November 7, 2017 is Election Day in St. Johns County but ONLY for the voters of the Town of Hastings.  This election is open to all registered voters who reside within the incorporated limits of the Town of Hastings.

Property taxes are collected in arrears, so, although Historic City News readers have been following budget proposals from taxing authorities, levying authorities, community development districts, county department heads and constitutional officers, like the clerk of court and the sheriff, over the last six weeks, those budget requests are for spending in the 2018 Fiscal year.

When it comes to paying your tax bill this year, St. Johns County Tax Collector Dennis W. Hollingsworth, CFC, is encouraging all Historic City News readers to get familiar, or reacquainted, with his office’s website which offers the most convenient way to pay.

The St. Augustine city commission listens to public comment regarding a course of action on the confederate statues in town. Rather than remove a confederate monument in St. Augustine’s downtown plaza, St. Augustine city commissioners decided Monday night to keep the memorial to soldiers who died in the Civil War, but also add “context” to better explain the complex history surrounding it.

If Gator DeLoach thought his battle to hold on to the seat of sheriff in neighboring Putnam County was over after winning a decision in circuit court, he would be mistaken.  DeLoach was elected as a Democrat in the November 2016 General Election in Putnam County; a squeaky close race against Republican challenger, Jonathan Kinney.

Historic City News reporters will be tuned to Monday night’s City Commission meeting, when Mayor Nancy Shaver presents City Manager John Regan with a proclamation recognizing Florida’s City Government Week, October 23- 29.

Within the city limits of the City of St. Augustine, Historic City News finds that there is very little which is more controversial than the use of a Planned Unit Development to circumvent established zoning. In fact, many critics of the practice refer to a PUD as “spot zoning”.
