Guest Column: Sales tax survey deficiencies

I want Historic City News readers to be aware of deficiencies with the telephone polling methods employed by a group of private individuals, the results of which are being given to our elected public officials to influence their decision in support of a sales tax referendum.
When Vice Mayor Roxanne Horvath brought Herbert A. Marlowe, Jr., PhD of Analytica Consulting to the city commission’s handpicked panel of volunteers, there were mixed reactions and some neighborhood residents said we didn’t need to spend the initial $15,000 consulting fee for a “visioning statement”. Taxpayers would end up spending $74,500 for the out-of-town consultant.

In talking with St Johns County residents, I have learned that there is a common concern among those families who have a relative suffering from some form of mental illness; whether it be post-traumatic stress, developing stages of dementia, or chemical dependency.
At the heart of continuing acrimony, City Commissioner Leanna Freeman is behaving like a juvenile; pouting when she doesn’t get her way. Apparently she doesn’t like that Joe Boles was defeated and that our new mayor, Nancy Shaver, is asking difficult questions, demanding transparency and accountability.

Our Switzerland neighborhood has formed the Fatio Grant Community Alliance to oppose the rezoning of 65-acres of open rural land to accommodate new construction of 116 single-family homes.

Article II § 5(b) of the State Constitution sets forth the words that, by law, must be subscribed by every elected official in Florida. Those words comprise their oath, their pledge, their promise, to perform their duties faithfully, and to perform them well.
