Kathy Nelson, is new to St Augustine. She doesn’t know the political and social connections yet and I’m sure she’s still learning her way around some of St Augustine’s landmarks; especially when they are regularly expressed in terms of where so and so used to be.

The most frustrating meeting of my eight years on the City of St. Augustine Planning and Zoning Board was the day the developer’s attorneys brought a request for permission to remove two trees from the vacant lot at the intersection of San Marco Avenue and May Street — now the infamous “7-Eleven Project”.

I say we should have an election every year.  Just look at all the activity. It reminds me of what you see when you turn the jets on in a Jacuzzi; a whole lot of foam at the top, but when you turn if off, the bubbles disappear.

Once again the need for the City of St. Augustine to review its zoning regulations became obvious to me and many others at a recent Planning and Zoning Board meeting, at which a property owner intended to turn the old castle at Flagler Boulevard and Alcazar Street in Davis Shores into a “small events venue”.

There has been a lot of posturing over the past year as St Augustine’s 450th Commemoration Department has attempted to justify its existence and avoid further scrutiny of its failed promises of sponsorships, private partnerships, and events worthy of, well, a “celebration on the scale of the Olympics”, I believe the mayor once said.
