For-profit charters schools blossom

Nikolai Vitti, superintendent of Duval County Public Schools, spoke to a reporter with the Jacksonville Business Journal yesterday to express his concern with what he sees as a growing threat to public education from private for-profit charter schools.

Frontier Airlines began nonstop service from Northeast Florida Regional Airport in St. Augustine, to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). Frontier also offers nonstop service from Northeast Florida Regional Airport to Trenton Mercer Airport in Trenton/Princeton, NJ. Historic City News was on hand on May 2nd when Frontier restored commercial airline service to the local airport; a convenient alternative to larger, more expensive airports in the region.
Although the City of St Augustine has approved plans to issue a building permit to construct a convenience store and 12-pump gas station on the long-vacant property at the intersection of May Street and San Marco Avenue, the residents say that will not weaken their resolve to protest the store that they say will cause the intrusion of hundreds of cars through their neighborhood daily.


In a Sunday morning e-mail from Historic City News reader Kathy Schirmacher, the local news desk received unconfirmed bad news for North City residents that the building department of the City of St Augustine has issued a permit allowing the construction of a controversial 7-Eleven convenience store and gas station at 179 San Marco Avenue.

Historic City News has learned that real estate owned through foreclosure by a Wells Fargo Bank affiliate has been sold to a central Florida family involved in a number of property investment projects throughout Florida for a reported $4.75 million.
