Dear Editor:

Payments in lieu of taxes are voluntary payments made by some colleges as a gesture of good will to help a city offset the loss of property taxes and to help defray the cost of services provided by the city. In no way should they be confused with fees and they are not assessed.

I have written to the City Commission in the past, and am writing again, asking that the PZB membership requirements be changed to be more inclusive. As they read today, they require that basically a person have a specially designated and current license or very specific profession.

The city has faced a number of zoning issues recently, most notable the 7-11 on May Street. Another property, known as the “castle”, which is located in a well-established neighborhood was zoned commercial by the city and the neighbors are battling City Hall to rezone it residential.
