School board and commission support each other

Against the backdrop of increasing public concern regarding the impacts of the economic downturn and decreasing revenues, it was reported to Historic City News that the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners and the St. Johns County School Board met Wednesday for their quarterly joint meeting.

The Southeast Branch Library has asked Historic City News to announce several upcoming public events at their branch located at 6670 US 1 South in St. Augustine.

Fire Department warns about phony solicitors

Historic City News has received a warning from the St. Augustine Fire Department prompted by reports of door-to-door and telephone solicitors who are stating that they represent the fire department when in fact they do not.

Historic City News has learned that Flagler College President William T. Abare, Jr. recently welcomed retired Flagler faculty and spouses back to campus for their February luncheon meeting and a scholarship presentation.

Save Art in State Buildings Program

At the writing of this editorial, the Senate Governmental Oversight and Accountability Committee is meeting (Thursday, March 5, 2009, from 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) to consider SB 1104; a bill which we feel should be opposed.

Traffic disruptions downtown Saturday evening

Historic City News has been alerted that the reenactment of a 17th century raid on St. Augustine by Searle’s Buccaneers will necessitate intermittent disruptions of traffic in parts of downtown St. Augustine this Saturday, March 7th.

Riberia Street makeover to be discussed

Cathy Dupont reported to Historic City News this morning that the City of St. Augustine will hold a public meeting on future improvements of Riberia Street – from King Street; south to the city wastewater treatment plant at 501 Riberia Street.

Historic City News has learned that Poet Nance Van Winckel will offer a reading and a craft lecture for the Flagler College Writers-in-Residence program on March 5th and 6th in the Gamache-Koger Theater.
