This week had some ups and downs, not unlike most autumn weeks after Labor Day, but one top story in St Augustine was concluded with little fanfare; a story about the American free press, the rights of citizens in this nation to criticize their government, and a clear reminder than when elected officials get too big for their britches, there are consequences.

I am happy to read that Commissioner Todd Neville has formally scrapped plans to seek a defamation lawsuit against Historic City News.

I’d be willing to wager that many, if not most, Historic City News readers living, working, and voting in the City of St Augustine, don’t have a spare $55,000 siting around the house, perhaps in a Yuban coffee can or stuffed in a mattress, that they’d be willing to gamble on the chances that an elected local public official, who currently is in office, can win a defamation lawsuit against the press.
